Wild Flowers on Manhattan Street by Victry

"As I stroll my way through the streets of Manhattan, I see people coming and going, entering in and exiting out from vendors and places of textiles and gems finding new owners to care for them. There I was a simple girl looking for the meaning of things. Not knowing were my next meal will be. Thinking how I'm going to make ends meet. Then a yellow beautiful canary showed up just in front of me. It was all happy when it found all sorts of edible things to eat: wild flowers, worms, bugs, and bread crumbs from someone's else meal. How small things like these, reminded me, that I'm more worth than a small yellow bird on Manhattan street."

  10. Playtime Anytime Anywhere ~ by Victry

"How fun our world is when we find friends to meet
Upside down it may be, but it won't stop me from being me
Playtime is anytime, playtime is anywhere, playtime anytime anywhere
Topsy turvy is what they say, I say ten is the top count to hide and play
1...2...3...ready and hide, 4...5...6...ready to find, 7...8...9 ready or not, 10 here I come!
Playtime is anytime, playtime is anywhere, playtime anytime anywhere
Working hard is what grown ups always do,
no wonder they have a frown like a clown, and so would you
I wish they can find time to smile and play and be a youth
If playtime is what they can learn from us, then the world would be the place they want!
Playtime is anytime, playtime is anywhere, playtime anytime anywhere
You may be ready, you may be not, that doesn't matter, because here I come!

  • Blooming Pollen Makes A Beautiful Mars Rose Garden. ~ Poem by Victry.

"Blooming pollen follow me, through the city sidewalks they accompany me. I see them in every flower shop, on every tree. On my car and on my knees! I sneeze all day, at night I can't sleep. My eyes are puffy, I can hardly see. Three times a day I reach out for my antihistamines. These blooming pollen should be shipped to Mars, where Elon Musk is planning to establish a human hub. These blooming pollen is what Mars will need, to help form a true colony. Up there they need trees, flowers, lady bugs, and bees! I'm sure these blooming pollen will make Mars a beautiful rose garden indeed. And forget me, I have here on Earth all the blooming pollen I truly need!"

    Androids Anonymous ~ By Victry

"They are not there to listen to you. They are there to hijack your brain. To overtake your thoughts and add theirs. It's a fight between your gray matter and their sophisticated circuitry. But, you paid for it. Yes, you spent every cent for it. You went with Chase that day when you purchase it. Now, this thing, knows your every thoughts. It knows your whereabouts. It's clever. It's smart. It's a super computer! But, do yourself a favor, stop feeding it. Stop inquiring it. Stop carrying it around. Tell it who is the boss. If you don't, it will continue to control you. Come on, it's your only chance to win your life back! Come on, do it! Or else you will end up like them, a pile of trash.

  • Horacio The Spanish Bull by Victry.

"Horacio was one of the most docile bulls you could have ever met. He was born and raised in a Spanish hacienda surrounded by cows, pigs, horses, goats, and sheep. All such were considered to be his farm family. One day a fire broke out in the barn, the animals were trying to find a way to escape, but couldn't. Horacio was never trained as a fighting bull. So he never had a need to use his horns. However he had to act quickly to save his friends. He remembered when he was young how his grandfather used to be trained for a bullfighting event. Horacio stepped back several feet away from the barn door. All eyeballs were on him. On the count of three he charged! The barn door flew opened. All of the animals were able to escape thanks to the brave, but kind Horacio!"

The African Element / Original Abstract On Canvas

    The African Element

    Original Abstract On Canvas
The African Element embodies the texture and colors of Africa. The color green, red, black, yellow, and brown all together reminds me of the rich African textiles and designs. I have always had a fascination with exploration and discovery. Recently I found out that some of my ancestors came from Sub-Sahara Africa. I can't wait to one day explore that region!

"You are an explorer deep down in the African jungle. It is the turn of the 19th century. You and your team have been in a digging site since early morning. Finally you made a breakthrough! One by one, the artifacts started to peek out from the ground. But then suddenly a dark cloud that brought with it a fierce downpour overtook the camp. Because of the heavy rain the makeshift campsite tent caved in. As a last resort, everyone ran for safety in a nearby cave. The cave was dark and misty. You can hear the sound of the hundreds of bat wings fluttering from different directions. As one lantern after another lit up the cave, colorful drawings started to emerge from its walls. The whole team were giddy with excitement from this newest discovery! Everyone, included yourself, were mesmerized by the raw beauty of the paintings and the story behind it. The walls tells of a story of a civilization that enjoyed a rewarding life. One painting struck your fancy. It was a painting of a salamander. The animal was red in color and it had around it what seemed like yellow, black, red, and green peppers. Then you noticed a lovely scent. You bend down and see a tiny bush. It was a bush of a white African Iris. It's color was breathtaking! Interesting enough next to it was a black pepper bush. You couldn't resist! You plucked out a small pepper. Then you had a bite. And the rest is history." -The Adventure of The African Element By Victry

    Original Abstract On Canvas
Bold Girl is about a girl meeting the uncertainties of life with conviction and boldness. In the painting Bold Girl has come out of her shell. There she had been since she was born. In that shell she felt safe, and secure. But now that she is not a little girl anymore she has to take on a new venture in life.

"Sometimes when we can't see what's deep down in the water, we start to imagine all sorts of things like sea monsters with googly eyes, long tentacles, and sharp teeth. But as soon as the sun reflects the truth underneath the layers of the ocean, we are less afraid, calmer, and crazy enough to jump into that shark infested water! You go Bold Girl! Mini Series Episode One: Victoria Lee, What Have You Been Up To?

What has Victoria Lee Jones been up to since Madam Charlton mysterious disappearance? Find out on episode one!

All About Etiquette By Emily Post

"To make a pleasant and friendly impression is not alone good manners, but equally good business." - Emily Post

Etiquette was once the expected way of social behavior. People showed respect, politeness and good manners as they interacted with each other. Nowadays these ethical code has been slowly disappearing.

Today instead of people showing the basics code of politeness like saying; excuse me, please and thank you. They curse, shove and are plain rude. People who behave such ways don't realize that they are not only hurting others but they are hurting themselves. Those of us though that that have a sense of etiquette and show kindness have to deal with such people on a daily basis. At times, it would just be easy to give in and throw the towel.

So what are we to do to keep from becoming rude ourselves and to hold our composure when dealing with others? Gratefully there is Emily! Emily Post was a famous and a beloved etiquette expert during the turn of the century. The following are a few points in...

How to Deal with Rude People:

Don’t take it personally. Perhaps the offender is having a bad day. We all have been there ourselves.

Size up your annoyances. Is it worth it to make a fuss over something small, or is it a waste of your emotional time?

Set a good example. Rudeness begets rudeness. If you speak sharply to the bank teller, don’t be surprised if you get the same treatment in return.

Count to ten. When someone’s behavior makes you angry, take a few deep breaths and ask yourself, “Is it really worth blowing my stack over this?”

Laugh it off. If you can’t come up with a friendly joke, just chuckle and change the subject.

Let’s say someone cuts in front of you while you’re in line. Say something like "Excuse me, I was here before you." Some people just like to see how much they can get away with, so if you call them on their behavior, they're likely to retreat. You can also politely ask “Why are you cutting in line?” The person may be embarrassed enough to step away.

You want to ask a question at the doctor’s office, but the nurse keeps giving you the brush-off. We all know how hard nurses work. So sometimes they’re just swamped. You also deserve to have your questions answered. So try this: Figure out the nurse’s name. Then say, “Excuse me Joan – or Bill, or whatever their name is. I know you’re busy, but when you have a moment, I could really use some help.” People are more likely to go the extra mile for folks who call them by name because it creates a bond and makes the person feel closer to you – like you’re friends. Acknowledging the fact that they’re busy shows that you sympathize with their situation – which makes you seem friendly.

    A salesclerk won’t help you.
If you’ve made several attempts to flag them down, and they STILL won’t talk to you, politely say “If you can’t help me, I would like to speak to a manager.” This’ll usually motivate the clerk, because they don’t want to get the boss involved. Remember to SMILE while you’re talking to them – that lets the salesclerk know that you’re not aggressive or looking for a fight.

by Emily Post & Good Housekeeping

The Following are several of my favorites Emily's Post quotes:

"Manners are a sensitive awareness of the feelings of others. If you have that awareness, you have good manners, no matter what fork you use."

"The honor of a gentleman demands the inviolability of his word, and the incorruptibility of his principles. He is the descendant of the knight, the crusader; he is the defender of the defenseless and the champion of justice--or he is not a gentleman."

This is one that I especially have to really work on: "If you are hurt, whether in mind or body, don't nurse your bruises. Get up, and light-heartedly, courageously, good-temperedly, get ready for the next encounter."

The Victoria Lee Jones Saga Continues

Greetings to all of my friends, and future friends to be! Thanks for stopping by Victoria Lee Jones Café Society! I know It's been a while since I had an episode written for my Victoria Lee Jones Café Society series. The reason that I had stop was because I had some personal doubts about continuing writing the series. And unfortunately because of that I decided to stop writing altogether. Biggest mistake ever!

I am not a professional writer by any means, and truthfully for me to become one it would take me a lot of schooling, time, money, and a lot of energy. Even if I had all of that, I wouldn't even embark on such a quest. Because writing is just one of the many hobbies and things that I love doing.  I have more important goals and personal projects that are currently on my priority list.

So a writer perhaps may not be what I considered myself to be. So to be fair I called myself a storyteller. That way I won't end up offending scores of English literature fans. "What kind of poopy work is this?" I also wouldn't want to step on some writers toes and get scolded by them. "You call yourself an author? Are you kidding me?"

So you understand where I am coming from. But I can't help it, I just love writing.

For me writing is an es·cap·ism / əˈskāpˌizəm (had to add the pronunciation. Love the upside down e). Writing have given me a chance to go to places that I could only dream of. Imagining a story and seeing it developing is so rewarding!

So I thought that I would go ahead and give it a try. So I did.

I got out my Mickey Mouse notebook and started writing my first Victoria Lee Jones story draft. After writing several drafts I was ready to post it on my blog. So I thought!

Okey so my grammar stinks. And to make things worst I don't have an extensive vocabulary. Again I enjoy writing but, and I have to painfully admit my English was never really good.

Spanish happens to be my real mother tongue. It wasn't until the age of three that I started learning English. And for any bilingual people out there. I don't know if you had this experience or not. But I found out after giving it much thought that I never really learned well either languages.

My brain could only hold just enough English and Spanish to get by. Composing a well written sentence in both languages was out of the question. And up to this day I still find it a challenge to write something that makes sense.

But it's never too late to learn. And like with everything else in life. Practice makes perfect. So I put my best foot forward.

Fast forward. A year ago. After painstakingly correcting my awful grammar on all of my nine Victoria Lee Jones episodes, my editor advised me that I had to read more. He gave me a list of books to read. Then he said "It will help you to expound your English vocabulary and improve your writing." Oh okey, I get your drift. I stink. Then came the constructive criticism. "Your story was good and interesting. Though I was a bit confused. Like for instance I didn't get episode ten. I just felt that it didn't make sense with the rest of the story."

"What didn't you understand? Do you want me to explain it to you?"

"Just considered what I said. And just work from there."

Reality hits hard! I had to face the fact that my writing STINKS! And that I had a long, long way to go before it could be considered decent enough for a 6th grader to understand.

After I have put so much effort and thought on my story. I felt that I just didn't have it in me to become a decent storyteller. Although my editor's intentions were noble. He truly wanted to help me improve my grammar. I still felt bad. I felt like a deflated balloon, with no air left, so I went down, down to the ground.

At that time I was going through a very low time in my life. I had been dealing with severe health problems which left me physically inactive. Writing kept me going. It kept my mind active and happy. I considered it my intellectual therapy.

But like a sad balloon, I was punctured by the harsh reality. And I went crashing down to the ground. And I stayed on the ground, with no more desire to continue flying.

So I decided to step away from it all.

I took on other hobbies and interest.

    Fast forward to now.

I missed it! I missed writing. Just putting my thoughts into words is one of the best gifts that brings me inner contentment and joy! I shouldn't have allowed my doubts and insecurities to interfere with what was wholesome and rewarding for me.

Has my English improved while I was away? Nope. As a matter of fact, eight months of no writing except for some text messaging and sending emails, has set me back, way back.

But here I am a stinky storyteller ready to continue to write again.

And I am totally excited to writing my Victoria Lee Jones series for you all.

I am back again flying in my air balloon. Can't wait to experience the joy of flying with you again!

    Sincerely Yours,

    Carmen Johnson

Sculpture Daniel Agdag and His Paper City

As of lately I have been into my art phase. I haven't done drawing or painting for a while. And boy how I sure miss it! So the other day when I went to Barnes and Noble to get my art fix I came across a magazine that had these photos of vintage-looking Art Deco Steampunk creations. Immediately I wanted to know the artist behind these awesome miniature cities!

I found out that the creator behind these amazing intricate buildings and sculptures is the Australian-based artist Daniel Agdag. And what I found out to be so interesting about this artist was that he had majored in photography and minored in painting. I was almost certain that he had majored in architecture. Or that he had some experience in construction. I was surprised when I read that his 'sketching with cardboard' creations was all self-taught and that are made without a blueprint, totally unplanned.

Daniel reveled in an interview with Notes On The Road how he is able to make these intricate creations. "I don't have a photographic memory but I do have a strong attention to detail. When I walk around a city I'll look at the details: I'll look at the pipe work or a little junction box- all sorts of things, and I retain those little elements."

I am always blown away by individuals like Daniel who with a little skill, and a lot of imagination can come up with a work of art all on their own!

Time to bring out the sketch book!

    My Monet Calendar

    My new 2014 Monet calendar

So last week I went looking for my new calendar to hang in my purple guest bathroom. For the past several years my calendars were all about old Paris. So after hubby and I ate at Cracker Barrel we hit the Barnes & Noble. Hubby went straight to his history section and I went to hunt for my calendar. I looked around. And there was no Paris calendar in sight. I saw a few that were okay, but I decided to wait for a later time to get the one that I really wanted.

Over this past weekend we went to Office Depot. I had to get inserts for my planner. Afterward again I was looking for my Parisian calendar. I saw a Parisian one, but somebody ruined the pictures by adding some awful neon lights to these what seemed to look like fantastic pictures. Who could have done such awful thing? It had to be Mr. Bean. That was definitely his signature look!

Anyhow after seeing the ugly neon lights on all other calendars I came to a soothing scene, Monet. Hummmm, peace at last!

Hubby is not a great fan of Monet. He thinks that Impressionism was unfinished painting done by lazy artists. I don't share his thought at all! I love lazy Sunday's afternoons things. Reading a good book. Bird watching. Drinking tea while knitting. And that is the feeling I get when I see a Monet.

Here are some my favorites Monet Paintings:

This one will look fantastic in my dining room!

This one with the little boy is one that I would love to hang in my Paris Room!

    All are just beautiful!

A Glimpse in History: The Bicycle

One of Leonardo Da Vinci's students in the 1490's made rough drafts of a bicycle. They were found among Da Vinci's writings for the Italian government in 1966 by a group of monks. What is realized with these findings is that in the 1490's all the parts of a bicycle were available to inventors and the public. Inventors were thinking about how to use the parts as well, but didn't think about putting them together. Interesting, is it not? The term bicycle was coined in France in the 1860s.

In 1870 James Starley made a bicycle with a large front wheel and a small back wheel. It was called the "penny-farthing" bicycle. The gear made the wheel turn two times per each revolution of the pedals. The front wheel was as high as the rider's leg length.

The problem with the penny-farthing (high bicycle) was that it was very dangerous because if the rider were to stop the rider could fall backwards. Also it was dangerous going down a hill. There was a lever that was operated by a spoon brake which could cause a fall and a special gear that made the wheel turn twice for each revolution. Oops!

    The Penny-Farthing

The first bicycle with a chain was made in 1874 by H.J. Lawson. The bicycle was made up of two wheels the same size driven by a chain on the back wheel. It was called the safety bicycle.

In 1893 the Wright Brothers decided to open up a bicycle shop. They sold bicycles and fixed old ones. When they decided to make the airplane, they used most of their knowledge from their bicycle career.
From 1900 through the 1950's there wasn't much enhancement on the bicycle because of the invention of the car. Bikes looked the same for almost 50 years with thick rubber tires, one gear, and metal frames.

6 Steps To Unleashing Your Creativity

As an emerging artist I always wanted to know how the big artist got their creativity. What moved these artist to write that big novel, to sketch that flying machine, to compose that awesome musical piece? What was their  "aha" moment that helped them go from an idea to a masterpiece? Everyone at one time or another has had that special moment. Though many times we don't capture that moment. So I asked myself, "How can I unleash that creative moment"?

Have you had a great idea at night before going to bed and the next day you completely forgot about it? The best ideas for me come always when I least expected. At those times I had wished that I dotted down my ideas. But buy the time I think about it I fall asleep. So relying on my memory to retrieve a great idea the night before was out of the question.

There are a couple of things I started to do to capture that aha moment. I would make sure to have with me at all times a small notebook, so when I do get that idea I will write it down right away. And second I started with what I do best, I wrote a List. Instead of writing a to do list in my planner. I started to write a creative list and you know what, it worked! Here is what I did...

6 Steps to unleashing your creativity:

1- Create your own Creative Space: You could choose to have a creative space. It could be your own studio, be it a room or corner in your house. Within that creative space you can start with having a simple pocket notebook, a journal, a scrapbook, a drawing pad, a photo album, a box, your computer, anything that you can write, draw and file. I for instance have my trusty planner were I dot down my ideas and inspirations.

2- Choose Your Passion: What talks to you? Is your Passion:
Art or Writing or Decorating or Fashion or Music or Sewing or Photography or Movies or Poetry? Choose that one Passion that you want to develop and make it your own. Vintage has been my passion. And so is Art and writing.

3- Make a list of your Favorite Things: This is a list of your favorite things, people or places that you absolutely love that most describe You. Develop your list as much as you can. And keep your list handy for when you have that oomph moment. Capture that moment and write it down.

Example of Favorite Things from the Sound of Music:
Roses kittens kettles mittens packages ponies streudels bells schnitzel geese dresses sashes snowflakes winters

These are a few of my favorite things: Victorian, Edwardian, Jazz music, Art Deco, Paris, dogs, cafés, hats, cameos, travel, bikes, orchids, bonsai trees, porcelain, trains, butterflies, and black and white designs.

4- Develop your list of Favorite Things: With a few descriptive words using your five senses if possible, describe what you like about that particular Favorite Thing. You can see this with the now more descriptive list of the Favorite Things from the Sound of Music:

Raindrops on roses whiskers on kittens
    Bright copper kettles
    warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings

I love the Victorian era because of it's elegance and femininity. Jazz music is soothing to me. Dogs are cute, smart, and so lovable. The Orchids delicate smell and designs are out of this world! The Monarch butterflies, was delicately stencils by the best designer ever!

5-Construct your own Inspirational Board: Start adding a two or three-dimensional concept that describes well your Passion and the list of your Favorite Things. You can find inspiration in magazines, the internet, fabric shop, the mall, or even in your own closet. Lets say that your Passion is for Fashion. So you are going to look, find, collect, compile from magazines or bookmark everything that you absolutely love about fashion in addition to your Favorite Things. You will notice that your Passion and your list of Favorite Things is starting to take shape.

I have a photo album where I file images of my passion and favorite things. Also my trusty planner is where I draw and sketch my ideas and designs. My computer is filled mostly with vintage photos of people, places, and things that I absolutely love.

6-Merge Your Passion & Your Favorite Things: Let’s say you chose Fashion as your Passion and rain as one of your Favorite Thing. You just love the sound, smell of rain, and how it gently falls from the sky and water the roses. Now add your Passion for fashion and rain to the equation. Hmmm a rosy red trench coat with a paisley raindrops pattern, viola! As you think and develop these two concepts you are going to come up with even more ideas of how rain can become a fashion statement.

    The Archives: Learning French

I always wanted to learn French. I think that the French language is so romantic and stylish!

Several years ago I started my goal of learning the language. I bought one of those learning French Cd's, which was pretty neat because not only they gave the basic French grammar but actually videos of people interacting with each other while speaking French. So for about a month I would practice everyday. I had difficulty reading the exact pronunciation. Though I could say that I was progressing slowly but steady.

Then one day I was running errands in a busy area of South Beach. And low and behold there were some ladies speaking French Creole standing right behind me. I was blown away! Not because they were speaking French. It was because I understood almost everything they said. And French Creole is not totally the same as French, though I still understood it well. Trust me , I am not the kind of girl that like to eaves drop, that is not proper etiquette. So I unintentionally continued listening to their conversation. And I would certainly not tell you what they were talking about, which is neither mine or your business. But it was groovy to understand what these ladies were saying.

Then I somehow stop practicing my French Cd's.

So several years ago I tried to get into it again. This time in addition to listening to the Cd's I incorporated in my learning schedule a PBS film. The film was about a guy meeting a girl in France. All of it of course was part of a French learning course, which I thought was pretty entertaining.

I wanted to really learn French. I had all the tools and equipment that I needed but I couldn't seem to progress. So I came to one painful realization. The problem was moi, ME. Yeap, I couldn't keep up with my schedule and French went avoir. Perhaps it was that I didn't really needed to learn it so badly, like if my life depended on it. I lived in South Beach were their were a variety of food, people and languages.

And mind you, there are plenty of French speaking people every where you go in South Beach. So are the rest of the English, Spanish, German, Italian and Portuguese speaking people that also lived and breath in South Beach. I am fortunate that I speak English, Spanish and a little Portuguese and that I had French and German friends. So in a way I felt like I could survive that International culture.

Now if I had moved to Paris years ago most likely I would be writing this experience in French. I think sometimes what moves people in learning a new language is of a need. And I have to admit, I fall into that category. Though their are exceptions like; "Do I really "need" another pair of shoes?." Or is it more do I just "want" a new pair of shoes. So Perhaps one day if I have to work in a bakery shop where the owner only spoke French that I might have then a real need to learn the language after all.

With all of that I still would love to learn French. My dream is to one day go to Paris and walked down it's famous streets and to walk into one of their famous café and ask for the toilette! No matter what you say in French it will always sound romantique and chic!

A friend of mine that speaks about six languages told me a great tip one day: "You have to submerge yourself into the language."

So the best thing for me to do would be to pack my things and start heading to Paris. I wish! Anyhow, in the meantime, I will still enjoy learning a little French just in case if I might need it one day.

    The Archives: Tennis

I totally love Tennis! I don't know if it is because of the tennis white crisp outfits which are soooo chic or because is almost mesmerizing to see a good tennis match. Either way I think that tennis is fun to play and watch.

    A little bit of tennis...

The Grand Slams Tennis Tournaments. There are four which are:

    • Wimbledon:

    Started in 1877

Held in the London suburb of Wimbledon, England, at the All England Club.

The tournament runs annually for 13 days from late June to early July.

    • US Open:

    Started in 1881

Location in Flushing, New York City

It is held annually in August and September over a two-week period.

    • French Open:

    Started in 1891

Held in Paris, France, at the Stade Roland Garros

This tournament runs over two weeks between mid-May and early June

    • Australian Open:

    Started in 1905

Held at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, AustraliaThe tournament is held each January

    Tennis Fashion & Etiquette:

Women began playing tennis in the 1860s, and their first outfits fit the Victorian ideals of modesty and practical materials. This tennis attire included restrictive corsets under high-collared blouses paired with ground-length skirts often made from flannel and trimmed with fur. These women’s outfits were darkly colored with tight sleeves that limited arm movement. The restricted movement allowed the ladies to hit lightly and to play a feminine version of tennis, often known as “pat ball.” In addition to all this clothing, Victorian tennis players wore fashionable hats that were distracting while playing sports.

By the 1890s, white had become the overwhelmingly popular color for tennis attire. When Maud Watson won the ladies’ Wimbledon in 1884, she was wearing a white outfit that became the symbol of tennis success. In addition to Watson’s fashion contribution, women realized that white was the best color to conceal inevitable perspiration stains. Most female tennis players of the late 19th century were upper class, and they did not want sweat stains on their tennis attire, an appearance most frequently attributed to the working class.

Tennis fashion has certainly changed! I agree with wearing more comfortable clothes when one is playing this kind of sport. What I don't like is the lack of propriety that is being displayed in the court nowadays. Not only the obvious decisions of clothing worn by some sports figure. But it is also the aggressiveness, rudeness, and violence that is being displayed on the court by players and spectators.

Unfortunately it is not only in Tennis that we see this trend going on, but it's in almost all kinds of sports. Times are different. There is more stress and less politeness in life nowadays. We shouldn't fall to such a low level of human indecency. Or else what will become of us? So why can't we just relax and have a fun time and enjoy the game! It is of course a game after all!

    Tennis Terms:

Tennis comes from the French tenez, the imperative form of the verb tenir, to hold: This was a cry used by the player serving in royal tennis, meaning "I am about to serve!"

Racquet comes from raquette, which derives from the Arabic rakhat, meaning the palm of the hand.

Deuce comes from à deux le jeu, meaning "to both is the game" (that is, the two players have equal scores).

Love originates from "l'oeuf", the French word for "egg", representing the shape of a zero.

The convention of numbering scores "15", "30" and "40" comes from quinzetrente and quarante, which to French ears makes a euphonious sequence, or from the quarters of a clock (15, 30, 45) with 45 simplified to 40.
